Our Expectations “Learn with heart, teach with passion and guide with love” are our guiding principles in education, and we have adopted these principles in managing this school. We are more than happy to share with you the meaning of each theme. 1. Learn with Heart “Learning to learn” is the theme of the Curriculum Development Council’s document. It states that all students can learn, and that different students have different intelligences. The students not only successfully learn what they are expected to learn, but they also become better at learning new things in the future (CDC 2000). We concur with the aim of the CDC, but achieving the goal is not such an easy task for many schools. It needs to go hand-in-hand with our expectations of Learning with Heart. Learning attitudes are of paramount importance in the learning process. “Learn with Heart” is one of the key issues in learning. Today, the community is complaining about the mentality and attitudes of the younger generation.sters. Thus, we place a strong emphasis on the learning attitudes of our students. “Learn with Heart” implies that students must learn with all their strengths, will and mind so that they can become responsible, industrious, committed and effective learners. They will be equipped, not only with strong learning skills and techniques, but also the kind of qualities required f to be an active learner. 2. Teach with Passion Teachers are undoubtedly the key persons in providing an environment conducive to learning. No matter how beautiful your school premises are, or how much money you invest in furnishing the school, without a team of enthusiastic and dedicated teachers, the school means nothing to the children. We do not need to describe the qualities of an effective teacher. You can find in literature numerous depictions of what makes a good teacher. What we expect a teacher to do is to “Teach with Passion”. According to our interpretation of a teacher’s roles, there should be three: a Manager, a Professional, and a Servant (MPS). A Manager is a person who does things right. It is the basic requirement of a teacher. You cannot imagine a good teacher with poor classroom management skills. Secondly, a professional teacher is a person who always examines his/her teaching through a systematic approach such as Action Research. He/She has the commitment and skills to reflect on his/her own teaching. He/She is also a lifelong learner and concerned about questioning and testing theory in practice (Stenhouse, L 1975). Lastly, being a servant is the most difficult and demanding role for a teacher. Most teachers perceive themselves as persons of authority. Their task, and their only task, is to disseminate knowledge and maintain order in classrooms. Students are not allowed to voice their opinions. However, we expect a teacher, with passion, is one who would like to be a servant. Service does not mean inferiority or weakness. In contrast, a servant is willing to serve the children wholeheartedly. He/She simply wants the children to attain all-round development and grow up happily and healthily. 3. Guide with Love Life is easy with directions. Teachers, parents as well as the peers could be the lighthouse for the students. They can share the core values and proper attitudes with the students and lead them to a fruitful life. Sometimes, teachers and parents will lose their temper and patience when giving guidance to different parties. They must remember, however, that only love can endure and combat adversity and hostility. “Guide with love” is of vital importance in guidance and counseling. The aforementioned are our expectations for teachers, Students and parents of Sau Tak Primary School. We have upheld this key vision in the past and will continue to do in the days to come.
